1) Decluttering makes people less stressed

Studies show that living at home with a lot of clutter can increase stress levels and reduce our ability to focus. One study in the United States found that mothers who lived in homes that were cluttered had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Not only that but it has also been found to negatively affect our sleeping patterns, people whose bedrooms had a lot of clutter tend to have more difficulty falling asleep and being disturbed at night.

2) It’s linked to being overweight and unhealthy

There’s an established link between disorganization and clutter in a home and people being overweight. They did a study that found that people who were in a disorganized and messy kitchen would eat twice as much as people in an organized kitchen. Overall, people that lived in cluttered environments are 77% more likely to be overweight than those that don’t. Lastly, studies show that people that live in clean and tidy homes are more likely to live healthy, active lives, which is extremely important for your overall happiness.

3) You become more productive

Scientists at Princeton University Neuroscience Institute found that the more clutter you have around you the more energy your brain needs to spend in order to focus. The reason being whenever you have items around you our brain either has to filter them out of your focus or direct attention to that object. The more objects you have in your peripheral the more items your brain has to filter and that uses more mental energy. This means the more clutter you have around you the harder it will be to focus on the things you want to focus on.

4) You can make most of the money back

Many times people have items in their house that they haven’t used for years. Once you declutter your house and you get a chance to sell all of the extra items you have you can sell those online and make back most or all of the money you spend on a professional organizer. The average American home has one of the biggest advocates for decluttering is something called the minimalist movement, this is all about people scaling down their lives and getting rid of things that they don’t need in order to live simpler and happier lives.
